It’s a simple fact that 2016 will go down on history as one of the worst years of all time. Political tension, celebrity deaths, and a resized Toblerone bar are just among some of the very many terrible things that’ve happened this year. So when Facebook’s founder decided he was going to make a joke about Nickelback recently, the world just couldn’t cope. It was the bullying straw that broke 2016’s back, and no one had time for it.
It all started during a promotional video for a new AI system, known as Jarvis, that Mark had set up in his home. In the video, Mark asks Jarvis to “play some good Nickelback songs”, to which the device replies: “I’m sorry Mark, I’m afraid I can’t do that… there are no good Nickelback songs.” Mark then pauses before answering: “Good. That was actually a test.”
But don’t worry, Nickelback fans, because one unlikely woman has just come to your favourite band’s defence: Avril Lavigne. In case you’d forgotten, Avril was once married to Nickelback’s Chad Kroeger, and it seems she still has something of a soft spot for him.
Taking to Twitter, Avril Lavigne wrote:
“Dear Mark, many people use your products—some people love them and some people don’t. Either way, you’re allowed your musical opinion however, your jab at Nickelback is in poor taste.
“When you have a voice like yours, you may want to consider being more responsible with promoting bullying, especially given what’s going on in the world today. #SayNoToBullying #TheJokeIsOld #NickelbackHasSoldOver50MillionAlbums.”
Of course, there were some people who quite rightly questioned Avril’s utter lack of ability to take a joke.
Anyway, slightly crap Nickelback jokes aside, Zuckerberg’s new AI system is pretty damn terrifying. It’s an incredible, Black Mirror-esque glimpse into the future, and I’m already scared.
