It was estimated that there were 563 movies released in 2015, but among the hordes of indies and b-movies, there are some films which already have a loyal fanbase and with that comes an enormous amount of expectation.
So to whet your appetite that little bit more, we’ve profiled 10 much-talked about movies due for release in 2017 and predict whether they will be any good or not.
1. Fifty Shades Darker
Release Date: 2/10/17
Following on from the mega-success of Fifty Shades of Grey comes the second adaptation of the popular E.L. James’ literary series, Fifty Shades Darker.
But things haven’t been plain sailing for those involved with its making, and amidst rumours of feuds between the two leads, things got worse when the screenwriter Kelly Marcel relinquished her screenwriting duties, leading E.L. James’ writer husband, Niall Leonard, to take over.
Prediction: Woman will watch on with lust, while their spouses look for the nearest exit
2. Lego Batman
Release Date: 2/10/17
The LEGO Movie was an unexpected success at the box office with both adults and children enjoying a film spawned from a video game.
Of course, with a movie like this, and the loyal fanbase that it has, news of a plot hasn’t been forthcoming, but there are rumours that the film will chronicle every portrayal of Batman which is enough to make us ridiculously excited. And while ardent fans may be disappointed to know that Lord and Miller have passed the directors hat onto Chris McKay, they remain producers, which should be more than enough to ensure they make the second one equally as enjoyable.
Prediction: A film that can be enjoyed by everyone- even worn-out mums
Release Date: 3/3/17
Hugh Jackman will be reprising his famous role of Wolverine one last time in 2017, with the up-and-coming Narcos actor Boyd Holbrook starring alongside him.
After a successful first movie, James Mangold was allowed to direct the second instalment, which will see Wolverine fighting against a corporation intent on destroying the world.
Prediction: A popcorn flick, but little else
4. Kong: Skull Island
Release Date: 3/10/17
At first thought, any reboot of King Kong would most likely be dismissed as something desperate yet following Legendary’s acquisition of the character’s rights; the film began to generate a buzz, and once the first trailer was released, it appeared Legendary were onto something.
Set around Kong’s origins, the action-packed movie, boasts an impressive cast, with J.K Simmons, Samuel L. Jackson and Tom Hiddleston leading the line.
Prediction: A likely return to form for one of Hollywood’s most beloved monsters
5. Beauty and the Beast
Release Date: 3/17/17
There’s something about an adaptation of a good old Disney movie that all ages can’t help but love, and whether it was the latest Cinderella movie or the well-received 2012 flick Snowhite and the Huntsman, Beauty And The Beast looks just as good.
Taking the helm in the director’s seat is Bill Condon, who will be working with a stellar cast including Emma Watson, Luke Evans, and the delightful British actors Emma Thompson and Sir Ian McKellen.
Prediction: Live-action Disney movies aren’t easy to pull off, but fans of the animation won’t seem to mind
6. Fast and Furious 8
Release Date: 4/14/17
What started out as a B-movie about drag racing in America has now become one of Hollywood’s most lucrative franchises, with the seventh instalment racking up an incredible $1.32bn worldwide.
After lengthy talks on whether the franchise should continue following Paul Walkers’ death from a car crash, the producers, who dedicated the final scene to the actor decided to go ahead with an 8th instalment, even though it had looked like Paul’s fitting send-off had signalled the end of the franchise.
Prediction: An 8th movie is unlikely to engage and resonate with audiences the way the 7th did
7. Guardians of the Galaxy 2
Release Date: 5/5/17
There’s no denying that Guardians Of The Galaxy was one 2014’s standout films and it proved a welcome addition to a genre that often takes itself too seriously.
And the good news is the second one is on its way with James Gunn promising a film packed full of mischievous antics and head-turning performances from its leads.
Prediction: The first was an unexpected delight, but sequels often fall short
8. Star Wars: Episode VIII
Release Date: 5/26/17
You’ll be hard-pressed to find a single movie-goer who didn’t buy a ticket for the much-awaited Star Wars flick ‘The Force Awakens’, and for the majority, they weren’t disappointed. But fans wishing for more of the same weren’t entirely convinced when it was announced that J.J. Abrams was handing over the reigns to Rian Johnson.
Known for his work on Looper and Brick, Johnson’s film will be heavily judged, and with the tension heating up and The First Order no doubt ready to wreck more havoc than ever, it appears Episode VIII is going to be one hell of a journey.
Prediction: With a director of Johnson’s quality at the helm, fans may just witness a sequel as good as The Empire Strikes Back
9. Wonder Woman
Release Date: 6/23/17
It’s about time the Marvel and DC franchises added a bit of female power to their ever-expanding addition of comic book adaptations, and thankfully the team at Warner Brothers realised this and plan to release the DC film sometime in the summer of 2017.
There’s also no doubting that both men and women will be delighted to see Gal Gadot at her majestical best following a brief glimpse of her in the much-maligned series Batman v. Superman: Dawn Of Justice.
Prediction: While it may not have the hype of other DC movies, Wonder Woman may become one of 2017’s standout flicks
10. Thor: Ragnarok
Release Date: 11/3/17
Admittedly, the second movie had its problems, but with the scintillating prospect of another face-off between his evil mastermind of a brother, it seems as though Thor: Ragnarok won’t leave us disappointed.
Prediction: Superhero flicks are being milked for all their worth, but Thor: Ragnarok may well be the best of a bad bunch
