Waves were pounding the shore and dogs were flying, but despite the big swell that showed up for this year’s Surf City Surf Dog contest, tails were wagging. The event brought 68 surfing dogs Sunday to Huntington Beach. The contest, now in its eighth year, not only shows off canine surf skills but also raises funds for nonprofit rescue groups.
“It’s a crackup watching the dogs. The people think the dogs are enjoying it, but I’m not so sure the dogs are enjoying it today. The surf was heavy,” said spectator Tom Baker. “People were getting knocked down and washed all around. It’s like a washing machine in close. … Some of the dogs have sheer panic on their faces and they can’t wait to get off the boards.”
