Michael and Turia were young and in love and planned to be married. However, 23-year-old Turia Pitt encountered a horrible accident in which she suffered burns to over 65 percent of her body. She was competing in a marathon in western Australia when she became trapped in a bushfire. Her fingers and thumb on her right had were gone and she spent five months in the hospital afterwards to undergo over 200 surgeries. The doctors were not sure that she was going to make it. Fortunately, she did but not without a struggle.
Turia was a model, a student and eventually landed a job as a mining engineer.
Her boyfriend, Michael was still very much in love with her despite this tragedy and stood completely by her side. He even gave up his career as a police officer in order to care for her full time.
He had no intentions of leaving her.
Before this happened, they were actively riding bikes, running and they planned on starting a family one day.
For two years, she lived in a mask to hide her burned face from the world.
Not many couples could have survived this tragedy but these two were determined to get through. He was her full-time caretaker. He fed her, washed her and even dressed her.
He also told her often, “You’re beautiful! You’re still my girl!”
After her numerous surgeries, she slowly got better and with Michael’s help and encouragement, she was starting to feel like her old self again.
He proposed to her in the intensive care unit and the two are now engaged.
Turia wrote in Friday Magazine, “When I look in the mirror, I see the beautiful girl Michael sees because like Michael, I know beauty comes from within and what really matters is who we are, not what we look like.”
Now, she takes off her mask and is able to see herself for the first time.
Her story continues to inspire people worldwide.
