Stephanie Nicole, a beauty blogger, just posted a video to her YouTube channel revealing that the Kylie Lip Kit and Colourpop Cosmetics Ultra Matte Liquid Lipsticks have almost identical formulas.
Recently, the formula for the Kylie Lip Kit changed. Nicole decided to compare the two products to see if the second formula stood up to the original.

While she found the quality of Kylie’s new formula to be just slightly lower, the color of the new formulation — which is listed as the same product on Kylie’s website — is also different.

On a hunch, Nicole investigated to compare the ingredients of the Kylie Lip Kit to Colourpop’s Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick, which is frequently listed as a dupe for Kylie’s product. Nicole found that the ingredients are just about identical.

Here’s the key for these colors:
– Yellow is the same ingredient, same order in the formula.
– Blue is the same ingredient, different order in the formula.
– Purple is the same pigment, but different order in the formula.
It’s important to know that there is no requirement for brands to list pigments in any particular order. You can read more about Stephanie Nicole’s ingredient breakdown here.
The Colourpop formula does have a few extra ingredients, but the formulations remain almost identical.
The Kylie Lip Kit (which includes a lip liner) costs $29 while the Colourpop Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick sells for $6.
The stock images of the two shades look very different, but it appears as though the stock image on Kylie’s website has not been updated along with the formula update.
After taxes and shipping, the Colourpop product is more than $23 less than Kylie’s product.
Colourpop costs a total of $16.82 and the Kylie Lip Kit costs $40.13. This calculation is based on adding a lip liner to the Colourpop liquid lipstick because the Kylie Lip Kit includes a lip liner.

And here’s Colourpop Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick in the shade Clueless.

Clueless is just a bit more pink, which would be an explanation of the extra pigment ingredients in the formula.
In the past, Jenner has addressed allegations that her lip kits have the same formula as Colourpop’s product.

This photo was posted at the end of 2015, but consumers got their hands on the new formulations in 2016.
The caption reads, “hanging out with the owners at @colourpopcosmetics we don’t have the same formula or exact colors but they are my friends and they do have some bomb ass products that i love. Check them out 🙂 #KYLIECOSMETICS.”
Meanwhile, the manufacturer Seed Beauty has Colourpop and Kylie Cosmetics both listed on its homepage. Both are suspiciously classified as “Confidential 1” and “Confidential 2.”
The brand manufactures both items.
Seed Beauty is owned by Laura and John Nelson, sister and brother business partners.
Laura and John Nelson also happen to be the founders of none other than Colourpop Cosmetics.

Moral of the story: Don’t just buy an expensive product because of the name. Labels mean NOTHING.
