Binge drinking is defined as when a male consumes 5 drinks or a female consumes 4 drinks in the course of ~2 hours. Next time you’re out with friends, measure how quickly you drink!
Most do it twice a week
Binge drinkers typically do not consume alcohol every day. Rather, they do it two nights per week. We think you can probably guess which nights of the week those are, can’t you?
75% of all alcoholic drinks consumed by adults in the U.S are consumed in the form of binge drinks. Add to this the fact that 92% of adults who drink report binge drinking in the past 30 days, and you might argue that America has a problem.
Violence as a result of drinking
A 2003 study showed that binge drinkers are 4 times more likely to engage in violent behavior than those who do not binge drink.
Drinking alcohol accelerates the process of mental deterioration known as dementia; in fact, it is the second-leading cause of dementia.
The highest intensity binge drinkers are from the age group of 18-22 years and many of them are college students. This probably comes as a surprise to, approximately, nobody.
Expenses in college
Each year, college students spend a total of $5.5 billion on alcohol- more than they spend on books, coffee, soda, juice, and milk combined. And we all know how expensive college books can be!
Alcohol and binge drinking has been shown to be a factor in 40% of all academic problems, and 28% of all college dropouts. Don’t drink and school, kids.
Adolescent girls drink more
At age 14, girls tend to consume more alcohol compared with their male counterparts. It’s well-known that girls tend to reach adolescence quicker, so is that why?
It’s a huge problem with adolescents
Binge drinking accounts for half of all the adolescent deaths because it increases incidents like accidents, date rape, fights and road accidents.
The age group with the highest frequency of binge drinking is those over age 65. Makes sense when you think about it- after all, what are YOU going to do all day after you retire?
The state with the highest percentage of binge drinkers is Wisconsin, who also are the highest intensity binge drinkers. This information comes courtesy of a 2012 study by the CDC.
Utah is, by a wide margin, the state with the lowest percentage of binge drinkers; only 10.9% of the population admits to it. It’s worth noting that, according to another list of ours, it is also the state that looks at pornography the most often. Utah, what’s your deal?
Around 20-30% of the road accidents are caused due to binge drinking. Before you figure you’re not that intoxicated, or you decide you live close-by enough, just remember this stat. It won’t kill you to call a cab or a friend.
Middle-class girls are more prone to it
Girls from middle-class families indulge in binge drinking excessively in comparison to those from poor or much wealthier families. We wonder why?
