Celebrities With Bipolar Disorder: Proof That Mental Illness Affects Famous People, Too

Demi Lovato

In 2011, pop star Demi Lovato publicly admitted she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder during a visit to a mental illness rehabilitation center. She was shocked to learn she was bipolar, as she went to rehab with the intention of receiving treatment for depression, self harm, and an eating disorder.

Lovato regularly discusses her mental illness with the media because she wants to raise awareness about common conditions that still have somewhat of a stigma attached to them. She says her bipolar treatment is going well, stating that “You can make the highs as amazing as possible, and you can control how low the lows go.”

Demi Lovato is just one of many bipolar celebrities. Keep reading to learn about 9 other famous people with bipolar disorder.

Catherine Zeta-Jones, an A-list actress who is married to Michael Douglas, spent some time at a mental health treatment center back in 2011 for bipolar disorder. There are several different types of bipolar disorder, and Zeta-Jones lives with bipolar II disorder. Bipolar II disorder is characterized by alternating episodes of depression and hypomania, and there is no cure. The condition can be managed with medication, counseling, and nutritional supplements.

After receiving bipolar treatment at an inpatient facility, Zeta-Jones seems to have her condition under control. The award-winning actress currently spends her free time doting on her 2 children and traveling with her husband, and the family is frequently photographed on outings together.

Over the last few years, she has battled drug abuse, domestic violence, and codependency. She was forced to sign custody of her first son over to her mother, and she shares custody of her second son with ex boyfriend Nathan Griffith. Evans blames her erratic behavior on bipolar disorder and anxiety, and she attended a rehab center for drug abuse and mental illness in the past.

Evans has filed restraining orders and domestic violence reports against a number of friends and former lovers, including Nathan Griffith, Gary Head, and Courtland Rogers. Her mother refuses to let Evans have her first son back until she cleans up her act, which includes avoiding bad relationships, staying away from drugs, and receiving continuous treatment for her mental illness.

Amanda Bynes

A couple years ago, Amanda Bynes Tweeted “I was diagnosed bipolar and manic depressive so I’m on medication and I’m seeing my psychologist and psychiatrist weekly so I’m fine :D”. The Tweet was quickly deleted, and Bynes later claimed a friend accessed her phone and posted the message.

Despite the deletion, it is public knowledge that Bynes has bipolar disorder and used to self-medicate by abusing drugs and alcohol. Before receiving treatment at a mental health facility, Bynes was charged with a DUI and suffered from episodes of extreme paranoia. At one point, she claimed her father had someone implant a microchip in her brain.

Remember that time Britney Spears shaved off her beautiful locks and attempted to rock a buzz cut? And that time she lost custody of her young sons and hit a photographer with an umbrella? She’s come a long way since then, and it’s partly because she received wonderful treatment for bipolar disorder.

Spears leads a fairly quiet life now that she has found the best medication for her bipolar disorder. She occasionally appears on TV shows, and she spends a lot of time with her children and other loved ones.

Kurt Cobain

The world grieved when Nirvana’s beloved grunge rocker, Kurt Cobain, committed suicide. His death brought awareness to a long history of mental illness, and sadly, his friends and family members were not shocked to hear about his death.

Cobain references his battle with bipolar disorder in songs like “Lithium”, which was a popular psych med for bipolar patients back in the 90s.

Marilyn Monroe

Marilyn Monroe is one of the most famous people with bipolar disorder. The stunning blonde died when she was just 36 years old, but reports vary regarding the cause. It is believed she died either from an unintentional drug overdose or a planned suicide.

Thanks to social media, Monroe’s quotes live on. Her face is plastered on numerous inspirational memes with sayings like “If you can’t handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don’t deserve me at my best.”
