If you’ve gone to your local grocery store deli lately, and felt that $6.99 for a pound of ham was outrageous, you’d flip in hearing that some people pay this Spanish man $4,000 for his ham slicing talents.
A leg of Iberico ham in Spain is already special in its own right, going for about $500, but when Florencio Sanchidrián gets his hands on it, the value skyrockets.
“I’ve now got a slice that will taste nothing like a normal cut and will in fact remind me that God exists,” Sanchidrián said in a New York Times article.
While on the surface, it sounds like narcissistic nonsense, he can’t be too far off if he’s sliced for the likes of Barrack Obama, Robert De Niro, David Beckham, and even catered to stars at the Oscars.
In an Interview with Munchies, Florencio gave a bit of insight to what his slicing secrets entail, basically saying that he understands the meat like no other.
“I continued to learn more and improve my skills until I decided to devote myself, body, and soul to this beautiful profession,” he told Munchies. “A good cortador de jamones should try to manipulate the joint as little as possible and when serving the meat, help people appreciate it with all of their senses.”
He’s now been slicing for over 30 years, saying it felt natural from the first time he grabbed a knife and applied it to the piece of meat.
Celebrities and ham enthusiasts clamor toward this man for a piece of his meat, and if I had those kinds of funds, so would I.
