Animal Hybrids

1. Jaglion


The Jaglion is a mix of a male jaguar and lioness pairing. A male and female jaglion where the result of a the pair being kept together at the Bear Creek Sanctuary in Barrie, Ontario, Canada. If the lion mated with the female jaguar the would produce a leoliguar.

2. Tigon


The Tigon is a cross between a lioness and a male tiger. The male tigon’s mane if present will appear shorter than a lion’s mane and looks similar to the ruff of a male tiger. Not as spectacular as Ligers so there is less interest for them. Researchers note there is’nt enough space in the womb for cubs to develop due to the smaller size of the tigress versus the lion.

3. Wolphin


The Wolphin is a cross between a false killer whale and a bottlenose dolphin seen here trained and performing at a marine park. Have 66 teeth as compared to the false killer whale parent with 44 teeth and the bottlenose dolphins with 88 teeth. The young will breastfeed from the mother.

4. Zonkey Colt


The Zonkey Colt is a cross between a zebra and a donkey.

5. Hinny


The Hinny is a cross between a horse and a donkey. The Hinny is sterile like mules and can be difficult to tell apart sometimes. Some look more like horses others more like donkeys. A hinny is more difficult to obtain because of chromosomes unable to match up. Donkeys have fewer gene pairs than a horse so with a lower number in the female donkey jennet, conception is less likely.

6. Geep


Not the 4×4! The Geep is a peculiar goat and sheep cross. Offspring are usually stillborn. They are both from a different genus so while crossings occur they are rare.

7. Grolar bear


The grolar bear seen here is a cross between a polar bear and a grizzly bear. Scientists say it does also occurs in the wild. If the polar bear is the father its called a pizzly. It has been suggested that due to climate change some grizzly bears have been observed moving northward. These territorial overlaps are bound to create some new interactions not commonly observed previously.

8. Zubron


The Cow and European Bison mix, it was once thought it would replace cattle. Zubron males are heavy animals weighing up to 2,600 lbs and females up to 810 kilograms 1,790 lbs. They are strong, resistant to disease and tolerant of harsh weather conditions.

9. Zorse

1473889819-7811-vkud0y3y8dfxThe Zorse is a Zebra and Horse cross. The were originally bread to produce a horse-like animal that was resistant to diseases spread by the tse tse fly in Africa. The difference in the number of chromosomes, 64 for horses and 32 to 46 for zebras can cause a sterility.

10. Liger


The Liger is cross of an African Lion father and Bengal Tiger mother. Hercules the Liger pictured above at the Jungle Island interactive animal theme park in Miami is the largest living cat on earth according to the Guinness Book of World Records. He weighs over 410 kg (904 lb) is 6ft tall by 11ft long he Jumps 30 to 40ft.
