“There is no too late.”
The modeling world may still be predominantly dominated by people in their teens and twenties, but there are older models who are helping to change the actual face of the industry.
80-year-old Deshun Wang is one model breaking such boundaries.
The actor-turned-model made headlines when he walked in a fashion show during 2015 China Fashion Week at the ripe age of 79. Not only did he strut down the runway with complete confidence, he did so while shirtless.
“There is no too late. You just need to set your mind to it,” it says in the video description.
“His name is Deshun Wang. He started learning English when he was 44, learned pantomime when he was 49, and started working out when he was 50. At 57, he came up with a performance art form ‘living sculpture.’ Then at 65, he learned to ride a horse. He started working on his abs when he was 70, and he learned how to drive a motorbike at 78. In 2015, at 79, he walked in a sold out runway show at China Fashion Week …There is no too late. No one can stop you from succeeding, you just need to set your mind to it.”
Just looking at Wang discuss his journey to Fashion Week and seeing his tenacity swimming and working out is inspiring.
The video is clearly resonating with people as much as Wang’s appearance at China Fashion Week did. Since the new video was posted on Aug 16, it has been reviewed over 2 million times.
Wang is one of a few older models making headlines. 56-year-old Nicola Griffin only started modeling three years ago, while 60-year-old Philippe Dumas gained recognition, as well as numerous modeling contracts, thanks to his gray beard.
Wang’s story highlights some very important points. It shows the need for a greater diversity in the modeling industry, and it shows that there should be no age limits on pushing yourself and pursuing your goals. Anything is possible.
